9:22 p.m.: Kenton Ridge leads 50-16 at the end of the second quarter. This game is capping off a day of what can best be described as sub-par basketball - there has not been a game were a team has lost by less than 20 points.

Graham Boys Handle Greenon 61-28

Falcons on collision course with rival Tippecanoe

By CASEY MATTESON
Sports Writer

SPRINGFIELD — The top-seeded Graham Falcons have some business to attend to. However, before that can happen, they must first take care of some other business. Step one was Saturday afternoon at Springfield High School. The Greenon Knights were no match for Graham in the opening round game of the sectional tournament, with the final tally being 61-28. Greenon (3-18), coached by former Triad and Urbana High School basketball coach Tim Lacy, could clearly not muster enough firepower against the tournament-tested Falcons. Graham (18-3) was consistently dominant winning each quarter in scoring, respectively, 16-6, 16-6 (for a halftime score of 32-12), 16-7, and 13-9. The fourth period was played exclusively with Graham’s starters resting comfortably on the sidelines, while Greenon’s starters frantically tried to outplay the Graham reserves. Both coaches applauded the effort of their team’s in the game.

Graham head coach, Brook Cupps, said, “Our guys played pretty hard, but we were a little sloppy in the beginning with nine turnovers. We talked about it at halftime and we only had two turnovers in the second half.”

8:00 p.m.: Eaton leads Indian Lake 62-17 at the end of the third quarter.

7:30 p.m.: Well, it looks like this Eaton/Indian Lake contest may be the most lopsided of the night. Eaton leads over the Lakers 46-14 at halftime, and the Lakers have only scored six of their fourteen points of the field goals - the other eight are from the foul line.

6:00 p.m.: Tippecanoe won by the final of 68-29.

4:30 p.m.: Graham won by the final of 61-28.

DePriest, Moss Lead Springfield to First Tournament Win

By BRYANT BILLING
Sports Editor

DAYTON — Springfield went into their first sectional tournament game knowing that they would beat the Stebbins Indians, Springfield head coach Darnell Hoskins said after the game. However, even though Springfield beat Stebbins handily by 16 points last Friday, February 26, at the University of Dayton Arena, no one, not players or coaches, was happy after the win.

“Stebbins got a lot of open shots they shouldn’t have,” Springfield head coach Darnell Hoskins said after the game. “Our inability to defend fundamentally like we’ve been taught all year was something I wasn’t very proud of tonight. We were a step slow to be there to help our teammates. All the little, small fundamental things that we’re usually good at, we sucked at tonight, frankly.”

Springfield Division II Games Postponed

Well, it looks like we won't be providing any more updates tonight afterall. Straight from Springfield athletic director Mark Stoll, all games at Springfield High have been postponed tonight. The two games that were postponed, Bellefontaine/Northwestern and Kenton Ridge/Milton Union, will be played tommorow along with the regularly scheduled games. The games will start at 1 p.m. and rotate on a two-hour basis for the rest of the day.

Stebbins vs. Springfield Live Updates

6:11 p.m.: Springfield wins by the final of 64-38. Trey DePriest led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Rob Moss and Akeem Freeman followed up with 14 and 12, respectively. Springfield head coach Darnell Hoskins was not too pleased with the win, as he said the Wildcats defensive effort was lack-luster at times, that Stebbins got too many open shots throughout the game, and that the Wildcats still have much more work to do. Still, he was pleased with the win, and said that, being tournament season, that all the matters at the end of the day. Springfield's next game is against Lebanon on Wednesday, March 3, at U.D. Arena at 8:30 p.m.

5:51 p.m.: Springfield leads 48-30 at the end of the third quarter.

5:48 p.m.: Springfield is up 41-24 with 3:04 left in the third quarter.

5:30 p.m.: I apologize to all readers - the incliment weather prevented me from arriving early, in fact, I arrived at the end of the first quarter! Springfield is up 36-22 at the end of the second quarter. The Wildcats are shooting hot so far tonight, but the defensive effort has not improved from Springfield's previous five games. Springfield won the first quarter 16-12. More live updates to follow in the second half!

Up First For Springfield: Stebbins

By BRYANT BILLING
Sports Editor

DAYTON — The Stebbins Indians aren’t the first team you think about when you think about Dayton area basketball. In truth, it’s easy to not think about them at all. Stebbins’ boys basketball team has been down for around the last five years and, ever since the Indians moved to the CBC three years ago, they have failed to compete in the Kenton Trial Division. But, Springfield head coach Darnell Hoskins says, the Indians are improved this year, and they’re not to be overlooked.

“I don’t know a whole lot about them at this point,” Hoskins said after a 63-53 loss to Northmont on February 20. “I know they have a better record and have had closer scores [this year]. I assure you, my staff is going to diligently prepare for them.”

Kenton Ridge Looking For Longer Run

By BRYANT BILLING
Sports Editor

SPRINGFIELD — It seems to be a curse for both the Kenton Ridge Cougar boys and girls basketball teams. No matter how good they do during the regular season, neither team seems to be able to advance far in the tournament. Take the 2008-2009 Cougar boys squad, for example: after going 17-3 in the regular season and winning the CBC Kenton Trail Division, the Cougars were ousted in the second-round by conference-foe Bellefontaine. But this year, hope springs eternal for the boys team, and they have now turned their focus toward the tournament.

“I think it’s in the back of our minds, but that’s where it is,” Kenton Ridge head coach Kris Spriggs said of last season’s early exit. “We’re focused on this season and this tournament.”

Hoskins Turning Focus Toward Tournament

By BRYANT BILLING
Sports Editor

SPRINGFIELD — It wasn’t exactly how Springfield head coach Darnell Hoskins pictured his Wildcat squad would end their 2009-2010 regular-season campaign. After a lengthy layoff during the winter storms that pounded Springfield with over a foot of snow earlier in February, Springfield was forced to postpone games and cancel practices, and, between February 12-20, the Wildcats were forced to play five games as a result — only to lose them all.

“It wasn’t quite my plans,” Springfield Hoskins said after a 63-53 loss to Northmont last Saturday, February 20. “I really didn’t see a [five] game slide coming. But who does?”

Springfield Falters to Northmont in Third

By BRYANT BILLING

SPRINGFIELD — It wasn’t the way anyone involved with the Springfield Wildcats had pictured the team would finish out their 2009-2010 regular-season campaign. After losing four straight, Springfield head coach Darnell Hoskins said his team was focused on finishing the year out with a home win. Instead, the Northmont Thunderbolts, who were 1-4 in their previous five games, came to Springfield and, on the back of a 24-15 third quarter in their favor, came out with a 63-53 win last Saturday, February 20.

“I’m really sorry for our seniors that this is the way they had to go out in their last home game here,” Hoskins said. “But more importantly, this is the time of year you want to be playing your best basketball in, and, quite frankly, we’re not.”

Triad Boys Defeat Mechanicsburg 66-59

Cardinals answer Indians’ comeback on Senior Night

By CASEY MATTESON
Sports Writer

NORTH LEWISBURG — Triad’s boys’ basketball team has been playing pretty as of late. On Friday night, February 19, it was their early play that told the story in their 66-59 victory over rival Mechanicsburg. Triad seniors Tyson Funderburgh and Ryan Rittenhouse closed their home careers with style by knocking down six three-pointers in the first half, including five of those in the pivotal second period. As a result, Triad built a ten-point lead at the half. Rittenhouse made two more from behind the arc in the fourth quarter, giving the two seniors all eight of Triad’s long bombs for the game. The Cardinals totaled 42 of their points in the second and fourth periods combined.

7:59: Centerville leads 21-17 at the end of the second quarter. Both teams started scoring on almost every trip down the court in the second quarter, but each possesion is lasting about thirty seconds. Springfield has not rebounded well thus far against a taller Elk squad, and Springfield has turned the ball over multiple times.

7:43 p.m.: A basket from Centerville's Stephan Rivera-Clack at the buzzer puts Centerville up 9-6 at the end of the first.

Bill Hart's Sports Peeps: Academia in NCAA basketball?

HARTSPORTZ! Commentary from the Hartland.

By BILL HART
Commentary

Academia wins again in sports! I heard a quote from Booby Knight the other day while watching him “comment” on a college game on ESPN. The never ending “one and out” rule was being debated again as college basketball draws ever nearer to the March Madness spectacle. According to the hall-of-fame chair thrower, a college basketball player has to enroll in 6 hours worth of classes and get a “D” average to make it through the first semester and qualify for the NCAA tournament. Enroll in a couple histories of music classes or bowling classes and the future NBA star is home free.
